Project update

On 16 June 2026, Covestro announced the Bio4PURConti project it coordinates, targeting a continuous process for bio-based aniline. The consortium brings together ten partners across seven countries and plans a semi-industrial demonstration.

The company describes a route beginning with biomass-derived sugars, followed by fermentation and catalytic processing. Aniline is used to produce MDI, an important building block for polyurethane.

Why it matters

The project addresses more than feedstock substitution: continuous operation, feedstock supply, downstream purification and product specifications must work together. Industrial adoption depends on technical, quality and commercial validation.

The announced 1.5 m³ semi-industrial demonstration is a project target; operating results and scale-up economics remain to be seen.

Application perspective

Assessments can distinguish feedstock origin, product specification, manufacturing process and end-use requirements. Bio-based carbon content and a product’s full life-cycle carbon footprint are different measures.
