From drying migration to fast charging: Trinseo launches an aqueous anode binder
Trinseo introduced a water-based SBR binder for graphite and silicon-containing anodes, linking binder distribution during electrode drying with cell resistance.
A binder designed around electrode drying
On May 13, 2026, Trinseo announced the commercial launch of VOLTABOND™ 211. The company describes it as a functional water-based styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) binder for graphite and silicon-based lithium-ion anodes, developed with fast charging in mind.
The launch draws attention to a practical manufacturing question: how the binder is distributed through the coating as the slurry dries.
Why distribution matters
Component distribution can change as an electrode dries. Adhesion near the current collector, particle cohesion within the coating and transport through the surface region need to be considered together.
Trinseo says the product is designed to reduce binder migration during drying and create a more uniform distribution through the coating. The development challenge is to balance mechanical integrity with electrochemical behaviour.
Read comparisons alongside test conditions
Compared with its second-generation VOLTABOND™ 029, Trinseo reports a 5% reduction in electrode surface resistivity and up to an 18% reduction in battery direct-current internal resistance (DCIR). The DCIR comparison used a 4 Ah pouch cell.
Useful comparisons also record the anode composition, coating loading, drying conditions and cell test method. Migration, adhesion and resistance should be considered together for the same material and process.
